Soul Noël
December 2009
The festive season is always a time for celebration and sharing, and what better way to do so than through song!
Alongside the very successful Soul Noel tour in December 2009, Serious' Learning and Participation team ran a series of workshops in two London primary schools and a secondary school in Gateshead.
Led by the all male Southern African A Capella ensemble U'Zambezi, students learnt celebratory and festive songs from Zimbabwe and South Africa as well as some very funky body percussion and gumboot dance.
U'Zambezi had over 200 young people from as young as 7 years old learning traditional songs in zulu and ndebele as well as contemporary songs where they could help compose the lyrics.
The results of these workshops were performed in day centres for the elderly within the local community of each school in London, and in Gateshead lead to a grand performance on the concourse at The Sage Gateshead just before doors opened for the Soul Noel concert.
Participating London schools were Galliards Primary School in Edmonton, North London and St Mary and St Michael's Primary school in Tower Hamlets, East London. In Gateshead, workshops took place in Emmanuel College, in partnership with The Sage Gateshead.
